For inf
I have loaded (very cheaply!!) on my XP based machine Xandros Premium Home Edition (with Firewall and all that)and never having used Linux before I am getting to grips with it as regards updating etc and it seems to work well and much faster than XP. They are also improving constantly the way to get things done "more like windows" and it is more intuative than I was lead to believe..it also has the ability to share windows files ..?"Codeweaver?" and other more advanced features that I have never used..Starts up fast and shuts down fast..XP on the other hand is a monster! Can recommend

I recently picked up a 14.1" Core Duo Toshiba Satellite at Best Buy for $650. Toshiba MSRP is around $800. This, of course, includes the obligatory Windows XP OEM license.

I priced out a system76 machine with almost the same specs as my Tosh. The "Gazelle" even looks like a generic knockoff of the Satellite (...but much less durable. 3 years repairing them taught me that.)

$1200? I repeat... $1200???
For a machine with a FREE OS?

"Well, thar's yer problem!"

HP is offering FreeDOS in customized machines as an alternative to Windows, supposedly to satisfy some agreement with MS that they won't ship a machine without an OS because it "encourages piracy." When you choose FreeDOS, the customizer subtracts the actual cost of the copy of XP... nice.
