Witty series of short movies explaining various reasons for buying an Apple Mac. Not recommended for Windows users unless they’ve been retrofitted with a sense of humour. The movies are clearly inspired by Umberto Eco’s celebrated essay arguing that the PC was a Protestant machine whereas the Mac was undoubtedly a Catholic one.

20|May|2006 1It’s not like I support MS, btw, just, I don’t like Macs. I try to run Windows as MS-free as possible (getting BBlean soon). I like the bit of Linux I’ve tried. Haven’t tested BSD or anything else. But Macs… not my thing.

13|Jul|2006 4Re the Umberto Eco argument that a PC is a Protestant machine whereas the Mac is undoubtedly a Catholic one, my own take years ago was, and still is, that Windows is more like a plate of spaghetti, while the Macintosh OS is more like lasagne. Why? Work it out for yourself.

11|Sep|2006 5I think the reasons given in these films are pretty stupid. Oh, good, the power cord comes out so you don’t trip over it. If you have an ounce of common sense you won’t put the power cord running from a PC ANYWHERE NEAR the floor space you walk on. Ditto all other cables. The message from these adverts appears to be ‘Macs have been made idiot-proof for all the idiots who’ll buy it just cos it looks cooler than a PC’. Just because Macs are initially easier to use it doesn’t make them better. Oh, and I totally agree about Michael’s pasta comment, that’s a very neat way of explaining the difference!

11|Sep|2006 6I agree, Ben. The idea that a magnetic power cord is a Great Technical Advance is idiotic. I liked the ads when they first appeared and they still make me smile sometimes. But they also evince one of the worst aspects of the Mac ideology — which is a kind of smugness: deriving a perverse satisfaction from being an elite minority. I write as a long-term Apple user. I love the kit and find that it provides excellent tools for the things i need to do. But in the end, it’s only a machine and computing isn’t about religion. I also know some people (like Cory Doctorow) who have become so infuriated by Apple’s attitude towards DRM, open discussion of the company’s deficiencies, etc. that they have bought dual-core Lenovo laptops and are running Ubuntu on them.
