I guess nobody outside of Microsoft knows, but this quote from a column by the well-known commentator John Dvorak is interesting:

I have run Vista Beta builds from first release to current, and am working on Longhorn Server that came out in this months Technet on various PC’s, 1 Latitude Laptop D610, 2 Optiplex GX 270 and 280, and a Precision 560. All PC’s were not considered “Vista Ready” with the exception of the GX 280 and after testing various things on each there are massive amounts of issues from extreme instability, install issues, driver issues, antivirus issues, down to simple application issues that wont run even if they are included with the Vista OS (Especially build 5308 both 32 and 64 bit) My poor laptop barley works, and when it does it has issues after a short time. I had hoped that Windows Update for Vista would resolve some of the issues but unfortunately the system cant install them on a non Vista ready PC.
